CarTold is operated by Norbin AS, organization number 915 097 049, Hjalmar Wessels vei 10, 1721 Sarpsborg, Norway. By using the site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

What CarTold is

CarTold is an independent research site for people buying used cars in the United States. Our reports, guides and tools are built from public records published by NHTSA, EPA/DOE (FuelEconomy.gov) and the EIA, together with our own analysis. CarTold is not affiliated with, endorsed by or acting for NHTSA, any other government agency, or any vehicle manufacturer or dealer.

Information only

Everything on CarTold is general information. It is not mechanical, legal, financial or safety advice about a particular vehicle, and it does not replace an inspection by a qualified mechanic. Complaint counts are owner reports, not confirmed defects or failure rates.

Always check open recalls for the specific car by its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with an authorized dealer, and ask the manufacturer or dealer about warranty extensions and customer programs.

Accuracy and data lag

We import source records on a schedule, so new recalls, complaints and bulletins can take time to appear, and a source can change or withdraw a record after we import it. We work to keep the site accurate, but we cannot promise that every figure is complete, current or free of errors. A missing record is not proof that no problem exists. If you find a mistake, please tell us.

Content and data use

The government records we use are public U.S. government data, and you can get them directly from the agencies. CarTold's analysis, summaries, classifications, compiled tables and research CSV downloads, as well as the site's text and design, are © Norbin AS.

You may quote short excerpts with attribution to CarTold and a link to the page you used. Copying or republishing our pages or datasets in bulk needs our written permission. The same terms are summarized on our Data Sources page.

Acceptable use

Please do not scrape, crawl or download the site in bulk, mirror or frame it, or use automated tools that put an unreasonable load on it. Ordinary search-engine indexing is fine. Do not try to break the site's security, interfere with how it works, or use it for anything unlawful.

Links and advertising

CarTold links to other websites, such as NHTSA and manufacturer documents. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content or availability. The site may show advertising, including ads served by Google AdSense. Ads are not endorsements, and advertisers do not influence our reports; see our editorial and advertising policy. Our Privacy Policy explains how cookies and consent work.

Limitation of liability

CarTold is provided free of charge and as is. To the extent the law allows, Norbin AS is not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of the site or from decisions you make based on it, including the purchase, repair or use of a vehicle. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have that cannot be limited by law.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. The date at the top shows when they last changed. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by Norwegian law. This does not take away any protection you have under the mandatory consumer law of the country where you live.
