What the public data shows

The most notable feature of the 2020 Escape's record is that two recalls were issued to fix repairs that had already been performed and didn't hold. Campaign 25V165000 supersedes an earlier fuel-system fire recall, 22V859000, and 25V345000 supersedes an earlier engine-fire recall, 23V380000. In plain terms: Ford recalled vehicles that had already been through a recall repair for the same underlying fire risk, because that first fix was not sufficient. Beyond the repeat repairs, the 23 recall campaigns are spread across a wide range of systems rather than concentrated in one — power train, back-over prevention, the electrical system, and the fuel system each account for three campaigns apiece, with several other systems represented once or twice. That breadth suggests a record touching many separate issues over the vehicle's life rather than one recurring point of failure. There is also one open investigation, RQ21002, concerning the rearview camera's sensing system under back-over prevention. An open investigation means NHTSA is examining a pattern; it is not a finding that a defect exists. Among complaints, the largest share falls into an "other" category (1,028 of 1,802), followed by drivetrain (257) and electrical (140) reports. These counts reflect how often owners reported issues in each category, not how many vehicles were actually affected. CarTold has separately examined coolant loss and rough-running complaints for the 2017–2019 Escape, a related but distinct report from this one.

Safety ratings

NHTSA crash-tests each body-style/drivetrain configuration separately, so ratings can differ by variant — shown as tested, not averaged. See how the 5-star ratings work, including why an overall score isn't the average of the three category scores.
