2021 Ford Explorer: Common Problems, Recalls and Vehicle Data

Check the 2021 Ford Explorer records before a viewing: recall campaigns, owner-reported symptoms, investigations, service bulletins and EPA fuel economy.

What the public data shows

The 2021 Ford Explorer has 417 complaints on file, but the more notable finding in the public record is a pair of repeat repairs. Campaign 25V159000 supersedes an earlier campaign, 23V342, and 25V166000 supersedes 23V199. In both cases, NHTSA's own records show that a fix Ford already issued once was later reopened under a new campaign number for the same vehicles, meaning the original repair did not resolve the problem it was meant to address. Recalls for this model year are also concentrated rather than scattered: back over prevention accounts for 7 of the 26 campaigns, mostly tied to rearview camera image loss or display problems, and the power train follows with 5 campaigns, several involving driveshaft disconnection or park-system issues. Together these two systems make up nearly half of all recall activity for the year. Service bulletins point in a similar direction. Of 226 bulletins, 50 concern the power train and 41 the electrical system, which are the two largest clusters by a wide margin. Bulletins are not recalls; they are guidance sent to dealers on how to address a reported symptom, not evidence of a required fix. Two investigations tied to this model year, EA23002 (engine) and RQ23002 (power train axle assembly), are both listed as closed, not open. In the complaint data itself, the "other" category is largest at 150 of 417, followed by drivetrain at 115. These counts reflect how often owners reported issues to NHTSA, not how many vehicles were actually affected.

Combined MPG is a weighted average, not the midpoint of city and highway — how EPA calculates these ratings.

Calculate your annual fuel cost

Safety ratings

NHTSA crash-tests each body-style/drivetrain configuration separately, so ratings can differ by variant — shown as tested, not averaged. See how the 5-star ratings work, including why an overall score isn't the average of the three category scores.
